- first madh’hab: Tanning does not purify any part of the skin or hide. This was narrated from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb, his son and Sayyida ‘Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with them. It is also the most well-known of the two narrations from Imām Ahmad and a narration from Imām Mālik.
- second madh’hab: Tanning purifies the skin or hide of animals whose meat is lawful to eat only. This is the madh’hab of Imām al-Awzā’ī, Ibn al-Mubārak, Abū Dāwūd and Is’hāq bin Rāhawayh [d. 238].
- third madh’hab: Tanning purifies the skin or hide of all animals except the dog and pig and what is born from them. This is our madh’hab. This was narrated by ‘Ali bin Abī Tālib and Ibn Mas’ūd, may Allah be pleased with them.
- fourth madh’hab: Tanning purifies the skin or hide of all animals except the pig. This is the madh’hab of Abū Hanīfa.
- fifth madh’hab: Tanning purifies the outer [dhāhir] skin or hide of all animals including the dog and pig. It does not purify the inside [bātin] and can only be used when dry. This is the madh’hab of Imām Mālik.
- sixth: Tanning purifies the outer and inner skin or hide [dhāhiran wa bātinan]. This is the view of Imām Dāwūd and the Dhāhirīs. It was narrated by Imām Māwardī and Abū Yūsuf.
- seventh madh’hab: One may benefit from the hide or skin without tanning and use it whilst wet or dry. This was reported by Imām Al-Zuhrī.[1]
